I sat on the bench for a moment longer, taking in the first full day that I could remember in what seemed like such a long time. Everything seemed to be happening so fast around me, yet all I could focus my thoughts on was seeing Clarke this morning, the shocked expression on her face as we watched Paul exit the hotel mere moments before I had. She had been the one to call Mr. Vance, my helpful lawyer that I no longer trusted to help me. She had given me her cell phone, the only lifeline I would have had to contact her. Had she done all of these things purposely, not knowing that I would take it upon myself to seek Paul out? She knew every detail of what I remembered, she knew how upset I was, how confused I had been feeling in the last few days. She was leaving town, I knew that, and now I could do nothing to stop my wandering thoughts from blaming her for the mess I was currently in. The dead man on the balcony, how had he gotten there? How could I not remember being in another room with Paul? I couldn’t place Clarke in any of the situations I had found myself in, but the text was real, and it had come from the phone I had in my possession.

The moment I stood up from the bench, the images of Detective Rio sliding a coffee cup towards me intruded my thoughts. I had met him the day before he died, sometime in the afternoon after having made my way into a bar, I knew that much for sure. The image of his hands on the table in the booth we sat in danced around in my mind. His face was still that of a stranger to me, but I was starting to remember more of his details. His hands were large, making the coffee cup seem so small, the hot liquid spilling out on the table as I grasped it mid slide. I understood how Paul and him had collided in a city like this – they not only worked for the same unit in law enforcement, but they were the type of men that would end up together. Two men with extraordinary facial features, tall, and looking for the same thing in a partner. It felt like such a cliche to me, but I could wrap my head around why it was such a common occurrence in our community.

I laughed a bit to myself, truly wondering what it was about me that made me incapable of finding someone that those feelings would grow with. Just as my thoughts began to slip into a daydream of my future self potentially falling in love with some stranger who ended up sweeping me off my feet, the phone in my back pocket started to vibrate. It took me a moment to realize what the buzzing noise and feeling was, before reaching back and pulling the phone around to see who it was that could be calling Clarke’s phone.
